Whether you are on a gap year or taking a career break, there are many volunteer opportunities across the globe that you can explore. Your choice depends on which part of the world you want to go and what experience you seek. In this post I have listed some of the options that will allow you to have a great adventure as you contribute towards a meaningful project.

1. Hiking in the Himalayan Landscape

One of the most picturesque country in the world, Nepal, the Himalayan Kingdom, boasts of natural landscapes like no other. As a home to the world’s highest mountain range, Nepal offer numerous opportunities to the adventure seekers. You can indulge in bungee jumping or raft in one of the wild mountain rivers here. There are treks for every level and you can even visit the base camp of Mount Everest. Believe me, to be on top of the world is one of the most amazing feeling of the world!

Unfortunately, in the year 2015 Nepal experienced a devastating earthquake which severely damaged homes and building all around the country. Many NGOs set up their bases in Nepal to help rebuild it with the help of volunteers. In Nepal you will find plenty of opportunities to volunteer labour to help rebuild homes for the homeless and the poor. And in exchange for your work, you will get free food and lodging. Mind you, the work is intensive but, on the weekends and public holidays you can take time to go on hikes around the country.

I will recommend Raleigh International as one of the top program which allows volunteers to work with the locals in the rural Nepal. You will likely be working in a splendid countryside and will be helping the rural communities which were affected by the devastating earthquake.

2. Catching the waves in Guatemala

Located just south of Mexico, Guatemala a great adventure awaits you in this land of rain-forests, volcanoes and ancient Mayan sites. How you want to explore the beautiful country depends on how much time you have. An ideal Guatemala itinerary will be around 1 week-10 days. If you have more time you can even choose to do volunteering.

So, how would you like to work with some small beautiful creatures which live in both sea and land? Sea turtle conservation in Guatemala with Maximo Nivel is one such volunteering opportunity which allows you to work alongside the biologists and researchers and help protect the endangered species.

As part of the program, with a minimum duration of 2 weeks, you will be keeping a watch on the nesting grounds, participating in nightly beach patrols, supporting turtle hatcheries and tagging the turtles. As you will be closely working with other people, there is lot you will learn in terms of team bonding and leadership skills.

In your free time, you will get to catch the great waves of Pacific coast where your volunteering destination is based. Apart from surfing and diving, you will also get to explore the fabulous Mayan ruins of Tikal and hike up the Pacaya Volcano. And, if you are looking for a big city experience, there are lot many fun things to do in Antigua, Guatemala.
